British Air Force Typhoon jets have operated alongside France's air force in a coordinated attack on an subterranean weapons facility in Syria used by the Daesh militant organization, as stated by the British defence ministry.

The location, identified by surveillance, was believed to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the announcement noted, and was situated in mountainous terrain just above the ancient city of Palmyra in central Syria.

"The RAF jets used precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to strike a number of approach shafts providing entry to the depot... early reports are that the strike was effective," the MoD said.

There was no sign of any civilian impact in the strike late on Saturday and all the aircraft made a safe return, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon FGR4s were assisted by a Voyager tanker plane.

IS - alternatively referred to as Daesh - imposed militant control over large swathes of Iraq and Syria prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This operation underscores British leadership, and commitment to work closely with our partners, to eradicate any re-emergence of Daesh and their violent and radical beliefs in the area," the British Defence Secretary the minister remarked.

UK warplanes have conducted surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "deter any attempted resurgence" of Islamic State following its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the ministry said.

"I extend gratitude to the personnel of British forces participating in this mission for their expertise and their courage," he commented. "They were among numerous UK service members stationed over the festive period. This mission, to take out dangerous terrorists who endanger our security, highlights how our armed forces are ready to step up, continuously, keeping Britain secure domestically and strong abroad."

Last December, the American forces carried out what it described as a "major assault" targeting IS targets in the country, following an assault claimed the lives of two US servicemembers and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations reports Islamic State still boasts between 5,000 and 7,000 fighters in Syria and Iraq.
