The Himalayan nation's Electoral Landscape Witnesses Major Alliance Formed By TV Host and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a significant development ahead of next year's general election, a pair of high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition emerges in the aftermath of large-scale and fatal young people's protests that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually led to the removal of the incumbent government.

A Pledge to Tackle Young People's Demands

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly pledged to focus on the grievances highlighted by the younger generation. This promise comes after the violent anti-graft protests that took place in September, which led to significant loss of life.

"Agreement must not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane following the deal was signed.

The September uprising was triggered by public frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a catalyst for deeper discontent stemming from a long period of slow growth and persistent allegations of systemic political corruption.

Terms of the New Electoral Agreement

According to the formal pact, the roles for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the leader of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing broad discontent with the country's established political class. He has previously held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central player in Nepal's ongoing political shift. He was instrumental in forming the caretaker government that came to power after the ousted administration was removed.

Broader Government Consultations Taking Place

In a related development, the current interim prime minister over the weekend held meetings with several major political leaders. These talks included ex- prime ministers and the heads of rival major parties, marking the initial such gathering since the period of the uprising.

Following these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to state that conducting a free and fair election is a collective duty. The message reiterated the government's dedication to ensuring a safe and open atmosphere for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
