Federal authorities have officially joined a lawsuit initiated by California Republicans, aiming to prevent the state's recently passed congressional redistricting map.
This court case, submitted to federal court, targets the map supported by Governor Gavin Newsom, which was developed in reaction against a GOP redistricting effort in Texas.
"The state's redistricting scheme represents a blatant attempt to seize control that violates civil rights and mocks the electoral system," declared the US attorney general.
The Democratic party have voiced assurance that the redistricting plan will survive legal scrutiny.
"The plaintiffs were defeated in the election and they are likely to also lose in court," stated a spokesperson for Governor Newsom.
Constitutional Challenge
The legal challenge claims that California's map wrongfully utilized race as a factor to heavily favor Hispanic voters in contravention of the US Constitution.
"It is unconstitutional to use race as a substitute to advance political interests, but that is precisely what the California General Assembly did with the redistricting measure," stated a high-ranking representative from the DOJ's civil rights unit.
Political Context
The legal battle represents the major counterpunch by Democrats in the ongoing political battle that started with Texas and has spread across various parts of the country.
Unlike other states, where Republican state legislatures have enacted gerrymanders, California's plan required voter approval, which it received with nearly 65% of the vote.
National Implications
The Democratic party need to flip just a handful of GOP-controlled House seats to take control of the House of Representatives in next year's midterm election.
The political group controlling the majority will influence the remaining period of the sitting president's term, deciding if a unified Republican Congress will continue to deliver its agenda or face resistance, investigations and possible further challenges.
